Since 1998, the inception of Baptist Student Ministries of SIU
Edwardsville, the ongoing financial needs of the ministry have been
met through the vision and generosity of the family of believers at
Calvary Baptist Church Of Edwardsville. Despite the fact that the
ministry has grown from about a dozen students in 1998 to more than
300 today, the church has continued to increase its financial
commitment ensuring the financial stability of the ministry.
Still, as the ministry has grown, it has become apparent that the long
range needs and vision of the BSM on the SIUE campus cannot be met
in this way - the responsibility must begin to be borne by more than
one individual or small group of individuals - it must become the
heartbeat of our leaders, our members, our alumni, our area churches
and our friends.
In the BSM's November student leadership meeting, it was decided
that the time had come to put a plan into action. Whether it be called
the “development fund”, "BSM endowment" or “vision plan” or
whatever, the idea is simple. Beginning with the director, moving
outward to the student leadership, and then outward further to
members, alumni, friends, churches, etc., we would ask those with a
heart for the long-range vision of the BSM to begin to contribute at
least $1 a week for the purpose of establishing a strong financial
base from which those objectives could be realized.
What form those long-range needs will take remains to be seen –
perhaps the establishment of a BSM building on campus or a
storefront center in the Edwardsville/Glen Carbon area, maybe it
would assist with staffing or student internships or fund mission trip
scholarships; serving the transportation needs of students who wish
to attend area churches but have no means is another possibility – We
don’t know where the Lord is leading us five years or ten years from
now but it is certain that we need to prepare now for the mighty work
that He has ahead of us.
The goal is to get a commitment from as many Christians as possible
who would be willing to give at least one dollar a week for as long as it
takes eventually generating a minimum of $1,500 weekly. All monies
collected are currently being placed in certificates of deposit with
the Bank Of Edwardsville. Oversight of these CD's is being
coordinated by the budget and finance team of Calvary Baptist Church
Of Edwardsville.
